Member: 28th Judicial District (President 1998-1999, Secretary-Treasurer 1979-1981), North Carolina (Vice-President, 2006; Board of Governors and Executive Committee, 2006; Chair, Development Committee 2002-2006; Chair, Mental Health Law Committee 1984-1985) and American (Member Probate and Real Property Section) Bar Associations.

Military: 1st Lieutenant, USMC, 1967-1970. Rifle Platoon Commander, Company M, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division, Vietnam , 1968-1969. Personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (with Combat "V"), two Purple Heart Medals.
