Roberts & Stevens mourns the loss of Gregory D. Hutchins
With deep sadness, Roberts & Stevens shares that our esteemed colleague and friend, Gregory D. Hutchins, passed away at his home on July 6, 2024, after a courageous battle with ALS.
A native of Buncombe County, Greg began his lifelong career with Roberts & Stevens in 1987, after graduating from Campbell University Law School. Upon joining the firm, Greg quickly became known for his knowledge and expertise in the areas of complex business transactions, tax, and real estate law. He was considered a “lawyer’s lawyer” by all who worked with him. Greg served on the Business Law Section Council of the North Carolina Bar Association from 2002-2005, and within the firm set a high standard for professionalism and work ethic, known for working late hours to provide the highest quality legal services to his clients. Greg served as firm President from 2013 through 2023 and was recently recognized by the Buncombe County Bar Association for his outstanding contributions and dedication to the profession.
As dedicated as Greg was to the legal profession, he was even more dedicated to his family and community. He and his wife, Nancy, raised five children and have two grandchildren, with a third on the way. Greg was an avid supporter of scouting, personally earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He devoted much of his time, energy, and talents to the Daniel Boone Council of Western North Carolina, where he served as a Scoutmaster and Executive Committee Member, and provided legal counsel. He was awarded Scouting’s highest honor, the Silver Beaver, in 1999. Earlier this year, the Council established the Greg Hutchins Eagle Spirit Award in his name, which will be awarded annually to a local Eagle Scout.
Greg served on numerous leadership committees, including at Trinity United Methodist Church, Givens Estates Methodist Retirement Community (former Board Chair and Honorary Lifetime Director), and the Buncombe County Land Conservation Advisory Board. He spent many hours working at the Hutchins family farm in Leicester, North Carolina, and was an expert outdoorsman who loved camping, backpacking, and rock climbing.
Roberts & Stevens is grateful for Greg’s many years of dedication and exemplary service to the firm, his family, and the community. He will be dearly missed.
A reception for friends and family will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, in the fellowship hall of Trinity United Methodist Church at 587 Haywood Road. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting Camp Daniel Boone’s Hutchins Memorial fund for the construction of a new building or program infrastructure in memory of Greg.
